A dashboard should help somebody make a decision. Start with the decision, not a chart library.
Write: “Who decides what, and how often?” Then identify the minimum measures needed. Define every metric: source, time window, formula, owner, and caveats. Build a simple version, test it with the decision-maker, and remove unused views.
“Sales performance” is broad. “Which regions need follow-up this week because qualified leads fell below target?” is actionable.
