Week 0 β Set up (free, one evening)
Week 1 β Learn the vocabulary with a βΉ5,000 experiment
Week 2 β Understand orders and costs
Week 3 β Learn what moves a stock
Week 4 β Decide your actual strategy
The traps that eat beginners in India
Taxes in one paragraph
Equity held under a year = STCG (20%); over a year = LTCG (12.5% above βΉ1.25L gains/year). Your broker gives a tax P&L statement β download it at year-end, hand it to whoever files your ITR. Simple until you start trading F&O; don't make it complex yet.
Your homework
Do the Week-1 βΉ5,000 experiment this week. Then post your biggest surprise in the replies β the emotion you didn't expect counts double. More market talk: Crypto & On-Chain Data and Algo & AI Trading. π
You've heard friends made money in stocks, you downloaded an app, and now you're staring at charts feeling like you're reading tea leaves. This is the calm, zero-hype starter path I wish someone gave me. Thirty days, small money, real habits.
Week 0 β Set up (free, one evening)
- Open a demat account with any big SEBI-registered broker (Zerodha, Groww, Upstox β compare their free delivery charges, pick one, move on; this step matters less than you think)
- Turn ON every security option: 2FA, MPIN, login alerts
- Write this on a sticky note: "F&O is not investing." We'll come back to why.
Week 1 β Learn the vocabulary with a βΉ5,000 experiment
- Put βΉ5,000 in β money you can literally afford to see drop 20% without losing sleep
- Buy 1 share each of 3-4 large, boring companies you USE daily (a bank, an IT major, an FMCG brand)
- Watch them daily. Note how it FEELS when one drops 3% in a day. That feeling β your reaction to it β is the real lesson of week 1
Week 2 β Understand orders and costs
- Market vs limit orders β place one of each so you've done it, not just read it
- Learn how brokerage, STT, GST and stamp duty nibble a trade (any broker's calculator shows this in 2 minutes)
- Delivered shares vs intraday: until month 3, you do delivery only. Intraday is a job, not a hobby.
Week 3 β Learn what moves a stock
- Read ONE company's last quarterly result announcement (the actual PDF, 15 minutes β revenue up? profit up? guidance?)
- Notice how results day moves the price. That's the market pricing information in real time
- Start a watchlist of 10 names β NO buying, just observing. Patience is a position too.
Week 4 β Decide your actual strategy
- Most reading this should simply SIP into index funds monthly and spend the saved hours on their career. Honest truth.
- If you still want to trade actively after this month β congratulations, now you've earned the right to learn position sizing (never risk more than 1-2% of capital on one idea)
- Set rules BEFORE money: entry reason, exit plan, max loss. Write them down. Paper-trade them for two more weeks.
The traps that eat beginners in India
- β Telegram/WhatsApp "sure shot tips" groups β if their calls were right, they'd be silently rich, not selling βΉ999 memberships
- β F&O in month one β stats say ~90% of retail F&O traders lose money. It will still be there in month six.
- β Averaging down losers "because it's a good company" β price falling is not a coupon
- β Investing money needed in the next 12 months
