Actual isolated MyBB test capture. Sample data; not a production install or a real payment/broadcast claim.

What changed
  • Counts actual post-body prose, excluding quotes and code blocks.
  • Uses browser word segmentation where available, with a modern Unicode regex fallback.
  • Rounds word count / 190 upward; hides the chip for empty content.
  • Updates after observed post additions or a df:posts-updated event. No tracking or external requests.

Requirements
MyBB 1.8.40 tested; PHP 8.1+ intended (runtime tests on 8.4.26); MySQL/MariaDB; modern browser. Custom themes, external authentication, mail and provider integrations require their own staging checks.

Installation and upgrade
Back up first. Upload inc/ and jscripts/ into the MyBB root. Deactivate old DF Read Time; upload inc/plugins/df_readtime.php and jscripts/df_readtime/; activate 1.1.0. Ensure you do not leave a differently named copy active.

Settings
No settings or custom tables. Estimate is fixed at 190 words/minute.

Usage
Code:
Open a thread with normal prose. The chip displays an approximate minute count and the word count. It is an estimate, not measured dwell time.

Test evidence
Actual 300-word fixture estimated as two minutes, quotation exclusion, live update to 500 words, JavaScript parsing and lifecycle.
The eight-release wave passed 117 scoped assertions across PHP/MyBB, browser, HTTP and lifecycle checks. Some tests used a combined plugin context; this is not a universal compatibility certificate or an independent security audit.

Limitations / breaking changes
Modern browser required; language segmentation varies. It is not a reading-progress tracker or analytics tool. Highly customized themes without .post_body require adaptation.

Deactivate / uninstall
Deactivate and optionally remove its files. No stored posts, settings or user records are changed.
