Guide 🗺️ The 2026 AI tools map — what to use for each job (free vs paid)

Everyone asks "which AI tool should I use?" — wrong question. There is no "best AI". There's only "best for THIS job at THIS budget". Here's the map I actually use, free picks first, honest paid picks where they earn their rent.

✍️ Writing & thinking

• Free: ChatGPT free or Claude free — drafts, emails, summaries, brainstorm. Genuinely enough for 80% of writing jobs.
  
• Paid (~₹1,700/month): pick ONE — ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro. Don't pay for both; the difference is taste, not capability.
  
• Honest note: the paid win is context size and speed, not smarter sentences.
  

💻 Coding

• Free: any model's chat + paste-your-error. Surprisingly far.
  
• Paid: an agent-native IDE (Cursor/Windsurf) or Copilot if your org runs VS Code. Agent mode is where the time saving actually lives in 2026 — it edits files, not just lines.
  
• Honest note: if you code 2+ hours a day, paid pays for itself by day three. If not, free wins.
  

🎨 Images & design

• Free: Bing Image Creator or Canva's free AI for social posts and thumbnails
  
• Paid: Midjourney only if images ARE your product (thumbnails for clients, brand work). For occasional use, free is 90% there.
  

🎬 Video & voice

• Free: CapCut for editing with AI captions
  
• Paid: ElevenLabs (voice) is the one voice tool that still sounds human; Runway/Pika only if video content pays you. Expensive toys otherwise.
  

📊 Data & analysis

• Free: upload a CSV to ChatGPT/Claude free and ask questions in plain English — most "data analysis" people need is this
  
• Paid: nothing yet. Pay only when you outgrow uploads and need live connections (then it's API territory — different guide)
  

⚙️ Automation

• Free: Make.com free tier — 1,000 ops/month is a LOT of automation for personal use

• Free: Perplexity free — the one tool that CHANGED how I search; answers with citations instead of ten blue links
  
• Paid: Perplexity Pro if you research daily. Writers/analysts feel it immediately; casual users, free is enough.
  

What I personally pay for (and why)
One frontier model subscription (alternates by month between the two big ones), one agent IDE, and Make's paid tier — total under ₹5,000/month. Everything else free-tier-hopped. My honest rule: every paid tool must save 3+ hours a month or earn its bill directly. Cancel ruthlessly every quarter.
