We've sat on both sides of this table — hiring agencies and being the studio. Here's the 9-point checklist we now use (and recommend) before signing anyone, including us:

  1. Live product portfolio — not mockups. If they can't show a site with real users, walk.
  2. Transparent pricing — published tiers, not "call for quote".
  3. Code ownership — you own the repo, the domain, the accounts. Always.
  4. SEO-ready by default — schema, sitemaps, redirects planned before launch.
  5. Real SLAs — response times in writing, not promises.
  6. Post-launch aftercare — 30 days minimum included.
  7. Security baseline — SSL, WAF, headers, backups — named, not vague.
  8. Communication cadence — weekly written updates, preview links every milestone.
  9. Founder involvement — know who actually builds. No juniors learning on your dime.

We built DF Studio on exactly this checklist — and we prove it daily on our own 22,000-member platform.

Small automations like this compound so much over time.
